First Look: Suburgatory

This interesting new comedy sees Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy playing the father/daughter team of George and Tessa Altman, who have moved to the ‘burbs from New York as George sees this as the safest place to raise his daughter. Now before I get into this, please let it be noted that yes, I know they look 100 times more like a couple than father/daughter, especially with that credits sequence (the tennis outfits!). I assume the writers knew this though, which is way she calls him George Atherton than daddy….

Supported by an experienced cast including Cheryl Hines (Dallas Royce), Rex Lee (Mr. Wolfe) and the always watchable but underused so far Alan Tudyk (Noah Werner), the show beats the well trodden “fish out of water” path, to fairly good affect, with the typical set of characters. It’s another one of those sitcoms where the comedy is largely brought by the situation, rather than any specific characters being funny themselves.

With that said, the standouts so far are Alli Grant as Lisa Shay and Carly Chaikin as Dalia Royce, both of whom definitely have their comedy moments (although the latter more the former). The Three Episode Rule once again came up trumps here, as The Wife was unsure after the pilot but by episode 3 she was a fan.

Suburgatory won’t have you in stitches for 18-21 minutes but it will put a smile on your face, which on occasion will develop into an audible laugh. Sometimes that’s just what you need after a hard day, rather than someone trying to have you rolling every 4th line and failing miserably. Try it out with your Three Episode Rule book at hand and you’re unlikely to be disappointed.
